At Nottingham we have an outstanding reputation for teaching quality. Our long-term commitment to maintaining excellence in the provision of learning and teaching ensures that the University is consistently among the highest-ranking performers in independent teaching assessments.
The latest independent review of teaching quality by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), an organisation which safeguards and helps improve the academic standards and quality of higher education in the UK, awarded 39 of our subjects a rating of Excellent - between 22 and 24, out of a maximum of 24 (2005).
Taught courses
We offer more than 300 postgraduate taught courses, spanning a range of disciplines and subjects. All of our postgraduate courses aim to equip students with a curiosity-driven and deep understanding of their subject, a critical approach and skills relevant to their future career.
As a leading research-led University, our teaching is informed by the very latest research developments. Our postgraduate taught courses constantly change and evolve to incorporate new research findings, and many are delivered by leading research scholars, passionate about their subjects.
Innovative teaching

The University is keen to ensure that teaching is always innovative and effective. Problem Based Learning – an approach which fosters skills in group working and collaboration, self-direction, reasoning, critical reflection, and knowledge acquisition and application – is incorporated into many courses.
Visual technologies, including simulations, video conferencing, and interactive whiteboards, are widely used to support and enhance student learning and link classrooms around the world.
For instance, PGCE teacher training students in the School of Education are able to observe, teach and interact with classes taking place in other European countries.
We are also developing wider uses for the technology including:
- direct links with the University's campuses in Malaysia and China
- the facilitation of student-tutor interactions using video-conferencing
- support for joint projects involving students from around the world

Personal development and employability
The University regularly consults with and surveys businesses and employers to ensure our postgraduate programmes provide students with the opportunity to develop key transferable skills, improving their employability.
Our Centre for Teaching Enhancement provides support for all learning and teaching developments across the University and works nationally to lead innovation in personal development planning for students.
Postgraduate students are supported and encouraged to plan their personal development to ensure they gain the skills they need to pursue their chosen career. This includes arranging work experience or undertaking skills training in a specific area.
