Nottingham is a major sporting city – something reflected in the University’s own sports provision and performance.
With over 72 Athletic Union sports clubs, over the last 15 years, Nottingham has consistently finished in the top 10 in the British Universities Sports Association overall league championship table.
During your time as a Nottingham postgraduate you will be able to make use of some excellent facilities for popular indoor sports such as badminton, volleyball, squash, swimming and snooker, plus, of course, outdoor favourites including rugby, football, tennis, hockey and cricket.
Sports centres
The impressive sports centre on University Park Campus houses 12 indoor sports courts, seven squash courts, a climbing wall, multi-purpose room, table tennis, a snooker room, and a bar.
There is a 25m eight lane swimming pool, a floodlit Astroturf pitch, three tennis courts, a modern two-storey fitness centre housing modern cardiovascular equipment, resistance machinery and free weights, and a relaxation zone with an infra red warmth cabin.
Modern sports centres are also situated on the Jubilee and Sutton Bonington Campuses.
Clubs and competitions
As a postgraduate student you will be eligible to join the Athletic Union sports clubs and have the chance to represent the University. There is a postgraduate cricket league during the summer months and postgraduate students are also welcome to join the staff squash or badminton clubs and represent their teams in Nottinghamshire leagues.
Teams and individuals are entered into the British Universities Sports Association Championships and local competitions in many sports, including rugby union, hockey, netball, football, squash, canoeing, rowing, badminton, tennis and cycling. For staff and students looking to improve their sporting skills, the University offers discounted coaching courses throughout the year.
Disability sport
The Department of Physical Recreation and Sport works closely with the Athletic Union and Equal Opportunities Officer to provide inclusive and accessible sporting opportunities for everyone.
Postgraduate students who have a disability or long-term medical condition may be entitled to discounted membership to the sports facilities and are encouraged to contact Academic Support for a referral.
Members of the Department can meet individuals to discuss how sports and an active lifestyle can benefit health and mobility.
Whether you want to participate in fitness for fun, achieve your personal best, or participate at the Paralympic Games, there are plenty of opportunities for you here.
Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme
In 2004, Nottingham was the first British university to sign up to the Government funded programme Talented Athletic Sponsorship Scheme (TASS).
Funded by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, the scheme helps talented athletes maintain an involvement in performance sport whilst undertaking a formal academic programme.
Candidates are generally selected by the relevant National Governing Body of Sport before starting their university course and must meet eligibility criteria.
As well as support with competition and training expenses, athletes receive sports support services including coaching, physiotherapy, and lifestyle.
There are currently nine TASS Athletes studying at Nottingham.
