We are keen to ensure that all of our students are well-prepared to succeed in their study. International students whose first language is not English must achieve an appropriate level in an approved test in English before they can register with a school or department.
The preferred international examinations and the minimum level required for entry to our programmes are shown in our Quality Manual.
Examinations should be taken within two years of registering to study at Nottingham.
Please be aware that specific higher entry requirements will apply to some programmes, for example for those in the Business School. Specific English language requirements for each course can be found in the online prospectus or by contacting the school in which you intend to study.
The Centre for English Language Education (CELE)
The Centre for English Language Education provides intensive English language and academic preparation courses throughout the year for students whose level is below that required for direct entry onto an academic course of study.
The Centre for English Language Education supports international students both before and during their academic study in England at The University of Nottingham. If you wish to achieve the required English standard and learn first-hand about British life and culture before beginning your academic course, you can attend a full-time general or specialised presessional course. This course can last from four weeks to nine months depending on your level of English.
If you already meet the University’s English language requirements, you can still benefit from a CELE course before registering for your degree programme as it will familiarise you with the linguistic, academic and social conventions of living and studying in England.
If you have already started your degree programme at Nottingham, a free programme of insessional academic English support classes and individual consultations is available.
