A thriving and dynamic centre for study, ranked in the top 10 for research power in the UK(Research Assessment Exercise 2008), the School of Politics and International Relations has more than doubled in size in the last few years, and has further expansion plans for the future.
The school is situated in the Law and Social Sciences building, at the heart of one of the most attractive campus universities in the UK. Students from all parts of the world enrol on our wide range of courses.
Excellence and achievement in research and teaching are our priorities. Our chief research strengths lie in security, social and global justice, contemporary political theory, international history, comparative politics, and British politics. The school has a reputation for outstanding research, and our staff are internationally recognised experts who regularly publish in leading academic and university presses, and between them edit several leading academic journals. We also encourage contact with the world of practical politics, including our long-running Practitioner Seminar Series, in which leading figures directly involved in political, military, and diplomatic work discuss their activities with our postgraduate student body.
The school encourages and cultivates collaborative work which over the years has led to the development of a number of research centres and institutes. These give a focus to the research work of the school, and postgraduate research students play a prominent role in centre activities. Our centres and institutes include:
- Centre for British Politics
- Centre for the Study of European Governance
- Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice
- CONCEPT: A Centre for Normative Political Theory
- Centre for Conflict, Security and Terrorism
- Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies
- Methods and Data Institute
Details of these can be found on the School of Politics and International Relations website.
