School of Geography

The School of Geography is a leading international centre of postgraduate teaching and research. We attract postgraduates through a variety of studentships and bursaries from research councils, the University, government agencies, and companies.

Students enjoy high levels of support within the School of Geography. The taught masters programmes have small group teaching and tutorials and each research student has two supervisors and an assessor.

Research students are accommodated in the school and provided with the necessary equipment for their work, including a computer, and a minimum annual support grant of £500. We also encourage research students to apply for further school and University funding, for example for conference attendance. Masters students have full access to school facilities, including the new computing laboratory and resource centre.

The school currently runs a portfolio of more than 30 funded research projects across all four research themes: cultural and historical geography; environment and society; geosciences; and new economic geographies.

Due to an expansion of academic staff, the number of taught courses has also increased. New programmes include the MSc Financial Services and Society (which also involves staff from the Business School and Law), the two-year MSc Human Geography and Chinese Studies and the MSc by Research in Geospatial Intelligence.

Career opportunities are varied for postgraduates from the School of Geography. During their time at the school, students participate in projects with commercial companies and this can lead to future employment. Our former students have gone on to work in consultancy, data management and analysis, engineering, the Environment Agency, higher education, and local and central government offices. Many also go into further research.
