The School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies (CLAS) has a lively postgraduate community and offers first-class supervision supported by excellent postgraduate facilities.
The Departments of Modern Languages and Cultures and American and Canadian Studies, (which together now make up the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies) achieved outstanding results in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Globally, almost 90% of the school's research was judged to be of international quality. More than 80 members of staff were submitted, making this one of the UK's largest and most successful centres of top quality research in Languages, Cultures and Area Studies.
We offer a range of postgraduate language diplomas, masters degrees by taught course and by research (for which the subject of study is agreed between student and staff), as well as MPhil and PhD supervision in the areas of literature and literary theory, film studies, critical theory, politics, history, thought, cultural studies, postcolonial studies, linguistics, and gender and feminist studies. All postgraduate courses are available on a full-time or part-time basis. In most cases, classes and supervisions can be arranged to fit in with your needs. All our postgraduates also receive training in research methodology and presentation, and participate in regular staff and postgraduate work-in-progress seminars.
Our postgraduates go into a variety of careers. Many have obtained academic posts in higher education institutions in the UK and abroad. Others have embarked upon careers in publishing, teaching, curriculum design, and professional interpreting and translating.
The full range of taught courses offered by the school are described in each of the following departmental sections:
In addition to the courses offered by the departments, we also offer the specialist taught courses listed below.
