School of Contemporary Chinese Studies

The School of Contemporary Chinese Studies was founded in January 2007 with a designated mission to become the best centre for research, teaching and policy analysis on contemporary China in the UK and Europe.

Staffed by academics specialising in Contemporary Chinese Studies, this is the only Chinese Studies Academic School in the UK to focus solely on contemporary China. Postgraduate students therefore benefit from specialist knowledge and expertise, and leave Nottingham with a range of transferable skills which are highly valued by employers in the UK, China and around the world.

The University of Nottingham marked its commitment to Chinese Studies in 2000 with the opening of the Institute of Contemporary Chinese Studies. This commitment deepened with the opening of the University’s Ningbo Campus in China and has continued with a range of investments including the development of this school, established in recognition of the national and global importance of understanding contemporary change and transformation in China.

The school is committed to undertaking and promoting advanced interdisciplinary social sciences research into key aspects of the rapid changes currently underway in China, and is recognised as a national leader in the provision of high quality discipline-based degree programmes. The school also contributes to other major University of Nottingham initiatives including extensive research and teaching collaboration with institutions in China.

The school houses the highly-regarded China Policy Institute, which is the UK’s only think tank dedicated to the analysis of critical China policy, and to the expansion of knowledge about and understanding of contemporary China.
