The School of Computer Science occupies a central position on the University’s
Jubilee Campus.
The prestigious, purpose-designed building includes the provision of the latest facilities for research into virtual reality and multimedia computing environments, as well as advanced teaching facilities and high-speed networking. The School has been established within the University for more than 20 years and embraces both Computer Science and the Informatics Institute of Information Technology.
The School continues to be research-led and was ranked in the top 10 per cent of UK Institutions in the 2008 independent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). All the research activity in the School was considered of international quality, with 80 per cent of it rated as world class/internationally leading. Activity includes:
Automated Scheduling, Optimisation and Planning (ASAP): ASAP’s research explores novel models and computational search methodologies to produce high quality solutions to a range of difficult real-world problems. www.asap.cs.nott.ac.uk
Foundations of Programming (FoP): FoP explores the fundamental, mathematical principles of programming. www.nottingham.ac.uk/cs/research/research_FoP.php
Mixed Reality Laboratory (MRL): The MRL is an interdisciplinary studio facility where computer scientists, psychologists, sociologists, engineers, architects and artists collaborate to explore the potential of ubiquitous, mobile and mixed reality technologies to shape everyday life. www.mrl.nott.ac.uk
Informatics Institute of Information Technology: This part of the School is responsible for full- and part-time taught Masters courses in Computing. It also supports research and development in areas of IT which are directly relevant to industry and commerce.
The School is involved in two cross-disciplinary groups:
The Interdisciplinary Optimisation Laboratory (IOL)
IOL carries out innovative, multi-disciplinary optimisation research at the interfaces of computer science, chemistry, engineering, nursing and psychology. The lab houses projects that are funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Biotechnology and Biology Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and industrial sources. www.asap.cs.nott.ac.uk/iol/
Learning Sciences Research Institute (LSRI): Researching learning and new technologies, the LSRI is a collaboration between the Schools of Computer Science, Education and Psychology. www.lsri.nottingham.ac.uk/index.php
