The Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering is one of the leading engineering centres in the UK, combining expertise in mechanical, materials and manufacturing and the impact of human factors on products and systems.
The department offers taught programmes covering a range of specialist and advanced engineering subjects, drawing on the internationally leading research of our academic staff and the strong links we have with industry and government agencies.
We have also developed significant expertise in the area of bioengineering at undergraduate level, and at masters level where we offer four closely related bioengineering courses. The Bioengineering Research Group takes this expertise to a higher level of investigation and combines significant expertise in the areas of biomaterials and biomechanics.
Our research has an international reputation in a number of technologies. These include hydrogen storage systems, composite materials for engineering components and surgical implants, lifting analysis of critical mechanical components subjected to extremes of temperature and stress, precision micro-machining technologies, electrostatically-guided vapour deposition processes, laser-assisted machining, direct injection spark-ignition internal combustion engines, recyclable composites for the automotive industry, reconfigurable fixturing technology for aeroengines, and many others.
Postgraduates from the department are very much in demand. A number of technology-driven companies are in regular contact with our staff, seeking highly qualified and capable individuals.
