MA in History

The MA in History provides allows students to acquire the sophisticated analytical skills to understand the past in a more nuanced way, to choose from a wide range of fascinating and challenging history modules, to be taught in small groups that truly stimulate and enthuse students and to prepare for doctoral research. Master’s teaching at Nottingham draws directly on the extensive and world-leading research expertise of staff within the Department of History. The MA in History allows considerable flexibility whilst at the same time allowing students to specialise and focus their research interests either thematically or by period by following one of the ‘pathways’. These pathways include: modern history, British history, gender history, medieval history and warrior societies. Along with the MA in History, we offer three other established taught degrees:

MATILDA – European Master in Women’s and Gender History

A two-year programme of study spent in at least two partner universities across Europe, with a summer intensive programme bringing together students and academics from all partner institutions. MATILDA offers the opportunity to study with leading European scholars of women’s and gender history. The programme combines core elements with elective options, encouraging comparative and transnational perspectives on European history.

MA in Medieval Studies

A taught interdisciplinary programme offers students the chance to put together their own tailor-made programme of modules offered by History, English, Art History, French, Classics, Archaeology and Music, the subject areas linked by Nottingham’s Institute for Medieval Research. Students explore the connections and contrasts between the various disciplines, the sources they employ, and the intellectual issues relevant to medieval studies.

MA in Local and Regional History

This course provides an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge and understanding of local and regional studies.
