The Department of German at Nottingham has a history stretching back to 1881. Today, it combines the best of tradition and innovation in its teaching and research, with staff expertise in literature, film, cultural history, linguistics, politics, history, the media, and gender studies.

We are committed to teaching programmes that build directly on our research excellence and that embrace the most innovative developments in German Studies. The department achieved 22 points out of 24 in the national Teaching Quality Assessment. It has also received the top rating (currently 5A*) in all three Research Assessment Exercises, confirming its position as one of the leading German departments in the country with an international reputation
