
The Department of Archaeology provides extensive facilities for postgraduate study. Staff are actively engaged in research and field projects and the Department offers a range of taught courses, including masters in underwater archaeology and bioarchaeology.
Ninety per cent of research in the Department was considered to be of international standard by the last Research Assessment Exercise. This research spans:
- the British Isles
- northern, central and Mediterranean Europe
- western Asia
Research covers areas including:
- beginnings of farming in the early Holocene
- development of complex societies and states in later prehistory
- historical societies and empires of the Roman and medieval periods
