The Centre for English Language Education (CELE) provides expert support to help international students succeed in their academic study at the University.
We also offer teacher training in this area, provide a range of modules to improve language proficiency that are particularly appropriate for study abroad/ exchange students, and supervise a small number of Masters by Research and PhD students.
The Centre’s research staff have particular strengths in spoken discourse and inter-cultural communication. CELE welcomes applications for doctoral study in areas including spoken discourse and English language teaching (ELT), cross cultural communication in conversational and professional settings, acoustic phonetics and its applications to language teaching, and spoken academic English including lecture discourse and pragmatics.
Along with research opportunities, the Centre also offers one taught postgraduate programme. The Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching English for Academic Purposes(PGCTEAP) is aimed at experienced teachers of English as a Foreign Language who wish to specialise in teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and develop a career in higher education. The course is underpinned by relevant theoretical foundations and has a highly practical slant.
