 The Centre for Environmental Management (CEM)

The Centre is located within the School and aims to:

  • Encourage inter- and transdisciplinary research in the area of Environmental Management and Sustainable Development
  • Promote postgraduate and executive training in partnership with people and organisations outside the University
  • To support the taught postgraduate programme in Environmental Informatics and Land Quality Management

It undertakes research and training at the interface of people and our environment.

Its work explores ways of identifying the choices we face in developing and implementing strategies for a sustainable future.

The Centre also offers:

  • Higher degrees and research training through its MRes, MPhil and PhD programmes
  • Full and part-time taught Masters and Postgraduate Certificates in land quality management, environmental management and environmental informatics
  • Executive training and continuing professional development though its short course programmes

The Centre for Geospatial Science

The centre is a major cross disciplinary research centre for geospatial science established in April 2005 under the directorship of Professor Mike Jackson. This is part of the University’s strategic investment in innovative research. The centre undertakes research in the areas of:

  • Geospatial Intelligence
  • Geospatial Interoperability
  • Mobile Location-based Services
  • Positioning, Routing and Tracking

The Centre for the Environment (CfE)

Addressing the environmental future will require unprecedented levels of research and study. The range of disciplines we cover reflects the truly interdisciplinary nature of environmental study. From Environmental Management to Environmental Law, from Renewable Energy and Architecture to Environmental History, from Tourism Management to Environmental Engineering, from Social Science to Physical Science.


The Centre for the Environment (CfE) provides a focus to develop inter-disciplinary approaches to environmental teaching and research within the University. At its core are seven Schools and Institutes, which span the natural, physical and social sciences. They are: The China Policy Institute, The School of Biology, The School of Biosciences, The School of the Built Environment, The School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, The School of Geography.

The Centre for the Environment actively seeks to work with others within the University and beyond, to promote an integrated approach to the teaching of, and research into, environmental issues that are relevant to the goals of sustainable development.
