The School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies comprises six academic departments plus the Language Centre. The departments are: American and Canadian Studies; Cultural Studies; French and Francophone Studies; German Studies; Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies; Russian and Slavonic Studies. The school has an outstanding research record and can provide first-class supervision supported by excellent postgraduate facilities. It offers a range of masters degrees by taught course and by research (for which the subject of study is agreed between student and staff), as well as MPhil and PhD supervision in the areas of literature and literary theory, film studies, critical theory, history, thought, culture and politics, cultural history, postcolonial studies, linguistics, gender and feminist studies. In addition, the school participates in an MA Chinese/English Translation and Interpreting; there are also taught postgraduate language diplomas in Serbian/Croatian and Slovene. All postgraduate courses are available on a full-time or a part-time basis.
The school has a lively postgraduate community of some 90 students who receive training in research methodology and presentation. Our postgraduates participate in regular staff and postgraduate work-in-progress seminars, and have access to extensive computing facilities and a designated postgraduate study space.
