MA Modern Languages (by Research)

One year full-time or two years part-time

This programme gives students the opportunity to study two modern languages at masters level. It is ideal for candidates who hope subsequently to register on a research degree programme. Students undertake a training course in research methodology and presentation and two courses of supervised guided reading in agreed fields of study within the School of Modern Languages, leading to the preparation of a dissertation of 30,000 words. Applicants will normally hold a degree in the two modern languages to be studied at masters level.

The school comprises the Department of American and Canadian Studies; Culture, Film and Media; French and Francophone Studies; German Studies; Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies; Russian and Slavonic Studies; and the Language Centre
The School of Modern Languages and Cultures and the School of American and Canadian Studies (which together now make up the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies) achieved outstanding results in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Globally, almost 90 per cent of the school's research was judged to be of international quality. More than 80 members of staff were submitted making this one of the UK's largest and most successful centres of top quality research in languages, cultures and area studies
