The Department of Culture, Film and Media is a pioneering hub of innovation in research, launched in 2010 from the former units of Cultural Studies and Film and Television Studies. These established areas of excellence are now mutually strengthened to offer a critical mass of expertise for postgraduate research.
The Department offers specialist expertise in distinct but also cross-cutting areas of research including:
- Cultural and Screen Industries
- New Media
- Critical Theory and Cultural Studies
- Hollywood Studies
- Film, Television and Cultural History
- East Asian and Global Cinema
- Digital Humanities
- Visual and Sound Cultures
- Mass Communications and Journalism
The department provides a vibrant intellectual environment for its large community of postgraduate students. It leads the Centre for Critical Theory and is home to the Institute for Screen Industries Research, benefiting from key industry links with Fox Searchlight, Dolby, and Lionsgate. The department also spearheads The University of Nottingham's lead higher education partnership with the British Film Institute.
Research students come to Nottingham from the UK and overseas, including the EU, the Middle and Far East, Latin America and the United States. With their diversity of cultural and disciplinary backgrounds, they constitute a rich, rewarding and supportive postgraduate body. The department has more than 40 students currently enrolled, either full-time or part-time.
