War and Contemporary Conflict Masters (MA)

Duration: 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time

This course has a start date in September

This exciting new programme introduces the student to the study of contemporary conflict. Taught by a variety of experts, the MA War and Contemporary Conflict seeks to cover many of the aspects of this important field of study, ranging from strategic thought and the laws of war, to analysis of current wars and the phenomenon of international terrorism.

Conflict remains an unfortunate reality of the human condition. Armed forces and the security agencies of states find themselves faced with a complex spectrum of conflict. This spectrum covers conflict prevention and management, at one end through peace-making and peace-enforcement, to counter-insurgency and war-fighting at the other end. Military operations often occur within a highly charged political and media environment and draw in a variety of actors such as international organisations and non-governmental agencies. The MA War and Contemporary Conflict aims to help the student understand the range of conflict scenarios and the confusing context in which it takes place.

The School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham provides an ideal academic setting in which to study contemporary conflict. There are a group of experts within the School that specialise in this field of study and they are complemented by links that the School enjoys with practitioners who come to share their expertise.
