Teaching English for Academic Purposes by Distance Learning Masters (MA)

Duration: 2-4 years part-time

This Masters programme aims to equip you with the skills necessary to become a competent, research-informed and innovative English for Academic Purposes (EAP) practitioner. There has been a significant increase in the demand for EAP teachers, and this growth has stemmed from the expansion of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI), the internationalisation of the higher education section, the increasingly dominant position of English as the language of education and research, and the rapid expansion of access to higher education.

The MA Teaching English for Academic Purposes (TEAP) focuses on the development of teacher competencies required to improve the academic literacy of students, and entails knowledge and skills that incorporate much more than basic mastery of classroom management skills and knowledge of language systems.  In order to achieve this, and on the basis that EAP is essentially interdisciplinary, the course draws on a wide range of intellectual sources including:

  • second language acquisition
  • applied linguistics
  • TESOL
  • psychology
  • sociology of education
  • epistemology and philosophy
  • ideology
  • cultural studies
  • media studies

Core elements in the programme promote a deep understanding of the role of EAP in academic contexts, academic discourse and literacies, and appropriate EAP pedagogies.

You will have the opportunity not only to develop your intellectual skills but also to enhance your teaching skills and understanding of EAP through activities which include collaborative work and engaging with academic staff.

The online MA TEAP is delivered in distance mode and there are three start dates (January, May and September).
