Politics and Contemporary History (Research Track) Masters (MA)

Duration: One year full-time or two years part-time

The new MA Politics and Contemporary History (Research Track) is offered in addition to the MA Politics and Contemporary History which is well established and attracts applicants of exceptional quality from the UK and abroad.

The research track MA Politics and Contemporary History aims to give you the methodological tools necessary to study politics at advanced level.

The MA has three elements:

  • research training
  • subject specific training
  • generic skills training

The ESRC DTC Training Programme modules and the the Designing Political Enquiry module aim to equip you with essential research methods skills in Politics, while the Research Skills for Historians will allow you to acquire the necessary research skills in History. 

The subject specific core module The Making of Political Science aims to review and assess the major approaches to the study of politics including rational choice theory, institutionalism, neo-Marixism and normative theory. In the subject specific core module Theory and Evidence in History and the Social Sciences, the key approaches in History are reviewed.

The MA Politics and Contemporary History (Research Track) is offered by the Schools of Politics and International Relations, and History as one of a suite of pathways for The University of Nottingham ESRC Doctoral Training Centre.

Entry requirements:Candidates are normally expected to have at least a good 2.1 Second Class Honours degree or equivalent.
IELTS:6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 for each element)
TOEFL paper based:573 (with a TWE score of at least 4.5)
TOEFL IBT:88 with no less than 19 in any element

Key facts

  • The course is offered as part of a suite of pathways offered by the Schools of Politics and International Relations, and History to The University of Nottingham ESRC Doctoral Training Centre therefore applicants may be eligible to apply for an ESRC DTC  ‘1+3’ studentship
  • The Research Assessment Exercise 2008 ranked the School of Politics and International Relations in the top 10 in the UK for research power
  • In the last independent subject level review of teaching, the school was awarded the maximum of 24 out of 24 (Quality Assurance Agency, 2001)
