International Relations (Advanced Research Track) Masters (MA)

Duration: 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time

The MA International Relations (Advanced Research Track) is primarily intended for those who are considering undertaking a reserch degee or other advanced qualification in international relations or social sciences.

This degree aims to give you the methodological tools necessary to study international relations at advanced level. It is composed of three elements: research training, subject specific training and generic skills training.

  • research training, which equips you with analytical and methodological skills to make informed judgements about issues relating to international relations;
  • subject-specific training, which provides an understanding of both the philosophical and practical basis of international political analysis, and examines new developments in international relations theory;
  • and generic skills training, which is available for those who are taking the MA as part of the four-year doctoral programme.

The degree programme is one of a suite of pathways offered by the School of Politics and International Relations to The University of Nottingham ERSC Doctoral Training Centre.


The school has particular expertise in conflict and post-conflict management, humanitarianism and the international political economy.

Entry requirements:Candidates are normally expected to have at least a good 2.1 Second Class honours degree or equivalent.
Other requirements:International students whose first language is not English are required to have the below English language qualifications before they can register on an academic programme. However, applicants from certain countries may have these requirements waived subject to the University of Nottingham Policy for Waiving English Language Entry Requirements.
IELTS:6.5 in the IELTS test (with a minimum of 6.0 for each element)
TOEFL IBT:88 on the IBT with no less than 19 in any element.
