Criminological Psychology Masters (MSc)

Duration: 1 year full-time

This course is accredited by the British Psychological Society

This course has a start date in September

This is the first step for a career in forensic psychology practice.

The Masters in Criminological Psychology is a one year full-time or two years part time postgraduate course which contributes to professional training in forensic psychology (British Psychological Society (BPS) Diploma Stage I). It provides comprehensive knowledge in theory and evidence based practice with victims and offenders: assessment, intervention and evaluation. It is an essential first step to becoming a forensic psychology trainee or to graduating onto The University of Nottingham’s Professional Doctorate in Forensic Psychology (DForenPsy - 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time). The successful completion of the DForenPsy confers eligibility to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council as a practising forensic psychologist and BPS chartered membership.

The Masters programme consists of six theoretical modules; theories of criminal behaviours, forensic child psychology, forensic mental health, legal psychology and policing, forensic organisational psychology and forensic practice interventions as well as two research methods modules and a research project/dissertation. The teaching is delivered through workshops led by experts Tuesday to Thursday each week during term time (36 weeks), leaving time for work experience in forensic settings. The programme is assessed by means of continuous assessment related to each module. Applicants must hold a BPS accredited 1st or 2nd class honours degree in a psychology programme (single or joint honours) or equivalent conferring eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBCM) of the BPS.
