Course Specific Facilities

Plates Students on the Postgraduate in Brewing Science have an impressive array of electronic literature resources at their disposal, with which to support their learning. This includes access to the full University of Nottingham e-Journal catalogue. Many journal article files are linked directly from the relevant course pages and this resource is supplemented by e-book chapters which provide recommended reading for the distance learning part of the course.

The one week intensive residential courses take place at our Sutton Bonington Campus and are delivered by staff from the School of Biosciences, with expertise in brewing and related sciences, together with invited contributions from specialist Brewing practitioners; all are internationally renowned leaders within their field.

This course is hosted by the Division of Food Sciences, which is an International Centre for both fundamental and industrial Food, Microbiological, Brewing and Biochemical teaching and research. Major research interests are: Flavour Science; Food Microbiology and Safety; Food Structure; and the BBSRC National Centre for Macromolecular Hydrodynamics.

The recently established Brewing Science Department is already regarded as a centre of excellence for brewing technologies and research, delivering education, qualifications and consultancy to meet the needs of the brewing industry.

Location


The School of Biosciences is a centre of excellence for teaching and research. It is situated on two campuses located approximately 14 km from each other. A free shuttle bus travels between the two campuses. Students in the School of Biosciences study both at Sutton Bonington Campus, a rural environment of some 500 acres and the University Park Campus, which is situated on a 330 acre landscaped campus, 4.5 km from the centre of the city of Nottingham.

At Sutton Bonington relationships between undergraduates, postgraduates and staff are closer than would be possible on a larger campus and all derive benefit from this. Living in a rural setting, with easy access to nearby towns and cities, is also considered by many to be a great bonus. Social activities are organised by the Postgraduate Association (PGA) in response to the specific interests of current members.

The International Students Society at Sutton Bonington includes members from 33 nations and liases with the PGA to arrange events of particular relevance to international members, as well as providing an opportunity for informal gatherings and cultural experiences.

Libraries

 
The James Cameron-Gifford Library is continually expanding to meet the needs of its readers within the School. It has recently been refurbished, which saw a complete overhaul of both floors, imroving access to printed and electronic materials, and equipment. There are also increased numbers of PC's and study areas as well as a fully trained roaming Information Assistants.

The Poject also included the development of the Centre for Integrative Learning facilities in a Learning Hub. The Learning Hub combines state-of-the-art technology such as high-spec PC's, Interactive Whiteboards and multi-adaptable furnishings, allowing students to work togethrer more effectively on group projects. 

In addition to substantial numbers of books and reports, there is also an extensive periodicals collection with over 300 current titles as well as a wide range of electronic titles. Most of the major abstracting and indexing databases are available.

These resources are supplemented by other libraries within the University of Nottingham, which are available to readers from this School, either personally or via inter library loan using the library online catalogue.

Research

The School undertakes research and teaching in the fundamental and applied sciences behind diverse issues such as the growth, development and reproduction of plants animals and microbes, the environment and its protection and the production and preservation of agricutural and food commodities, including food structure and quality,nutrition and safety.

Research and teaching within the School are organised into five groups: Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Animal Physiology, Food Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Plant Sciences.

In addition, the School has extensive national and International research links with companies and institutions working in the field of Bioscience.

IT resources

Computing facilities within the School are excellent. PCs are extensively used and you will become familiar with wordprocessing and the use of spreadsheets.

 
The University is linked to other national and international academic research institutes via JANET (the Joint Academic NETwork). Advice on mathematical analysis, statistical design and computer programming is provided throughout this course.

Environment growth rooms

Specialist facilities for plant work include controlled environment growth rooms in which plant and tissue cultures can be raised.

The School has a Tropical Crop Research Unit in which computer controlled glasshouses are available for research on a range of tropical species.

University farm

Covers approximately 400 hectares, provides an example of commercial farming and is used for teaching and demonstration purposes.

Sporting facilities


A brand new £2.4 million sports centre opened in January 2008, comprising of a four court badminton sports hall, two squash courts, a practice room for martial arts, table tennis and exercise classes as well as a fitness suite.

The developments also encompass the old squash courts which have been completely transformed. One is now a climbing wall; the other, a music practice room.

The Sports Centre provides an all-weather pitch and, for indoor sports, five-a-side Football, indoor Cricket and Hockey, Badminton, Volleyball, Tennis, Squash and Basketball.

The many clubs and sporting societies include Rugby, Football, Cricket, Hockey, Badminton, Riding, Tennis, Squash, Netball, Billiards and Snooker, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Karate, Caving, Mountaineering, Rifle Shooting, Fell Walking and the Motor Club.
